Foam Party Guide: Foam Cannons, Foam Liquid & Setup Tips
A good foam party does not need to be complicated. You need a clear foam zone, the right equipment, enough water and foam liquid, and a setup that keeps the wet area organised.
Whether you are planning a school fun run finale, a sports club celebration, a community event or a backyard party, this guide covers the basics: how foam is made, where to set up, what to look for in a foam cannon, which foam liquid to use and the practical checks that make event day easier.
What is a foam party?
A foam party is any event where a space is filled with thick, fluffy foam bubbles, usually pumped out by a foam cannon or foam machine. People can move, dance and play through the foam, making it an easy add-on for school events, fun runs, sports club days, festivals and kids' parties.
Foam also works well as a finish-line feature. Pairing a foam zone with a colour fun run gives participants a big final moment after the course without needing to turn the whole event into a foam party.

Where should you hold a foam party?
Outdoors is usually the easiest option. Choose a flat, level area with good drainage and enough space to keep participants, equipment and spectators organised. For school and community events, a grassed area is generally easier to manage than a hard or slick surface.
Foam can make surfaces slippery, so avoid steep slopes and keep the foam zone clear of obstacles that could become hidden once bubbles build up. If you are using a hard surface, make sure the venue has suitable drainage and slip controls in place.
Keep mains-powered equipment and connections out of the foam zone. With the Monty the Monstar Foam Cannon, the power supply/transformer must stay dry and be positioned away from water spray, runoff and rain.
Where to position your foam cannon
Place the cannon on a flat, stable surface or use the supplied tripod as directed in the operating manual. Aim it into the designated foam zone, secure the setup so it cannot be knocked over, and keep cables and the power supply away from participant traffic.
Before the event starts, check the direction of the foam, the participant route and the wind. A small adjustment before everyone arrives is much easier than trying to reposition equipment in the middle of the event.
How is foam made for a foam party?
The process is surprisingly simple. A foam cannon draws a diluted mix of water and purpose-made foam liquid through a pump, then pushes it through mesh while a fan creates the bubbles. The result is a steady stream of foam that can quickly build up in a defined area.
For organised events, use purpose-built equipment and a foam liquid made for foam machines. Avoid improvised electrical setups or homemade machines around water. Always follow the equipment manual and the foam-liquid mixing instructions.
For a small gathering of around ten little ones, a compact consumer foam maker might do the job. For anything bigger, such as a school event, a club day or a community celebration, you will want a proper event-grade foam cannon.

Choosing the best foam cannon for your event
Foam cannons vary a lot in quality, output and, most importantly, safety. Here is what to look for.
Low voltage operation. Many large foam machines run on 240 volts, which is a real concern in an environment that is, by design, soaking wet. A low voltage cannon greatly reduces the risk of electric shock. You can read more in our article on 27V vs 240V foam machines.
Waterproofing and safety switches. Look for a cannon with clear operating instructions, a safety switch/RCD or GFCI, an emergency stop and a setup that keeps mains power components dry.
Spray range and output. Think about the size of the space you want to fill. A cannon that projects foam several metres lets you cover a finish line chute or a dance area from a safe distance.
Portability. If you are moving the cannon between events or setting up on an oval, size and weight matter. A durable body that can sit on a flat surface or be mounted on a tripod gives you more set-up options.
Built for regular use. If your school or club plans to run foam events year after year, a robust, event-grade cannon can pay for itself compared to hiring every time.
Support and documentation: For schools, clubs and community events, a clear operating manual, safety information and access to product support matter just as much as foam output.
The Monty the Monstar Foam Cannon is designed around this type of event use. Its power supply outputs 27V DC, with the fan and pump operating at 24V, and the operating manual lists a spray range of approximately 3-5 metres. It also includes a GFCI/RCD, an emergency stop and an 8-metre power cable so the mains-powered transformer can be positioned away from the foam area. The cannon can be used on a flat surface or mounted on its tripod.
Each cannon also comes with Foam Liquid. For product safety information, you can also view the Foam Liquid Safety Data Sheet.

Are foam parties safe?
Foam parties can be run safely when the equipment is set up correctly, the operating instructions are followed and the area is actively supervised. For the Monty the Monstar Foam Cannon, only adults who have read the operating instructions should operate the machine.
Use level, stable ground. Foam can make surfaces slippery, so keep the area clear and avoid hard, slick or steep surfaces where possible.
Keep the power supply dry. The mains-powered transformer must stay away from water spray, runoff and rain.
Test the safety device before use. Follow the operating manual's GFCI/RCD test procedure before running the cannon.
Supervise the foam zone. Have an adult operating the cannon and another person watching the participant area when children are involved.
No diving. Foam does not cushion a fall, so participants should stay on their feet and keep moving through the zone.
Keep the route clear. Do not leave glass, equipment, exposed stakes, cables or other hazards where the foam could hide them.
Do not operate in rain. If weather conditions change, stop and follow the operating manual.

What if foam gets in someone's eyes or on sensitive skin?
Purpose-made event foam is still something you should keep out of eyes and mouths. If foam gets into someone's eyes, rinse with clean water. For guests with very sensitive skin, the operating manual recommends testing a small amount on a patch of skin first.
Keep clean rinse water nearby and make sure organisers can access the Foam Liquid Safety Data Sheet if needed.
Choosing the best foam liquid
The quality of your foam depends on both the machine and the liquid. Use a concentrate made specifically for foam machines, mix it at the recommended ratio and use clean water.
Too little concentrate can give you weak foam; using more than directed wastes product and may increase the chance of irritation. Always follow the manufacturer's dilution instructions rather than guessing.

How to build a foam tunnel for your fun run
A foam tunnel is one of the best ways to add a show-stopping moment to a school fun run or obstacle course. By funnelling foam into a narrow chute, the bubbles pile up higher and faster, and the wind can’t carry them off.
1. Choose a straight section of your course, ideally on grass and close to the finish line.
2. Create two walls using temporary fencing, barrier mesh or shade cloth attached to star pickets or poles, secured with tent ropes and pegs.
3. Leave the tunnel wide enough for runners to pass through comfortably without bunching up.
4. Position your foam cannon at one end or to the side, aimed into the tunnel, and let the foam build before the first runners arrive.
5. Station a volunteer at each end to keep runners moving and to make sure the foam stays below head height.
For a simple event-day setup, you can also pair the foam zone with Race Kits so participants have rainbow sunglasses and headbands ready for the run.
Will a foam party ruin your clothes?
Foam parties are wet events, so dress accordingly. Purpose-made foam liquid is designed for event use, but fabrics, dyes and finishes vary, so it is better not to promise that every item of clothing will be unaffected.
Wear old sportswear, swimwear or other clothes you are happy to get soaked, bring a towel and a change of clothes, and wash items according to their care instructions after the event.
Are foam parties still a thing?
Absolutely! Foam parties are as popular as ever, particularly at school events, fun runs and kids’ parties. Some indoor venues have become more cautious because of drainage and slip concerns, which is one reason outdoor foam events are thriving.
For schools in particular, a foam finish line can work as one part of a larger event alongside colour powder, slime and other fun-run activities.
Follow the basics (grass or good drainage, anti-slip matting on hard surfaces, no glass, low voltage equipment and active supervision) and a foam party is one of the safest and most memorable activities you can add to your event.

Tips for an even better foam party
Prepare extra foam mix in advance. Foam cannons can work through liquid quickly. Mixing a larger batch in clean containers beforehand means less time refilling and more time enjoying the party.
Have water on hand. A hose or a few bottles of clean water nearby makes it easy to rinse eyes or hands.
Plan your power and water supply. Check what your cannon needs before the day and make sure you have access to it close to your set-up area.
Keep the ground level and clear. A gentle slope can help water drain away, but steep ground plus foam is a slip waiting to happen.
Add colour. Pair your foam zone with colour powder, slime, sunglasses and headbands for the ultimate messy play event.
Buying a foam cannon vs hiring one
If you only need foam once, hiring from a local party hire company can make sense. If your school, club or business runs events regularly, owning your own cannon usually works out better over time.
Compare the full cost rather than the hire price alone: delivery, deposits, collection times, availability, storage and maintenance all matter. Owning your own cannon gives you control over dates and setup, while hiring may suit one-off users who do not want to store equipment.

Want the foam without the organising?
If you are a school planning a fun run, you might not need to buy anything at all. Through our sister company, Australian Fundraising, schools can run a Monty the Monstar Fun Run with colour powder, sunglasses and headbands for every participant, promotional resources, a dedicated Fundraising Coach, and no up-front costs. On average, schools and groups raise twice as much with an Australian Fundraising program as they do with a DIY colour fun run.
Eligible schools in Brisbane, the Gold Coast, the Sunshine Coast, Sydney and metropolitan Melbourne running a Monty the Monstar Fun Run may also be able to book Monty’s Magical Wonderland, which brings inflatables, a slime pit, a foam cannon and Monty the Monstar himself to your event day. Monty’s Magical Wonderland is not available in the ACT, Tasmania, South Australia, Western Australia or the Northern Territory, and is subject to availability and T&Cs.
