How to Host a Colour Explosion Fun Run - Colour Powder Supplies for Schools, Clubs and Community Events
Everything You Need from Holi Colour Powder
There's something magical about watching a crowd of kids disappear into a cloud of colour. If you've been tasked with organising a colour fun run for your school, community group, or club, the good news is it's easier than you think, especially when you have the right supplies. At Holi Colour Powder, we stock everything you need to pull off an epic colour fun run event, straight from our Brisbane warehouse.
Whether you are planning a school fundraiser, P&C event, sports club fundraiser, childcare centre activity or community colour run, a Colour Explosion Fun Run is a bright, memorable and highly shareable way to bring people together.
This guide explains what a colour fun run is, how much colour powder you need, what supplies to order and how to set up your course.

What is a colour fun run?
A colour fun run is a fun run event with a vibrant, colourful twist. Participants run or walk a course while volunteers shower them with bursts of Holi colour powder at stations along the way. The result is a spectacular explosion of colour that makes for incredible photos, happy participants, and memories that last long after the last cloud of powder has settled.
It works beautifully as a fundraiser, a school sports day event, a community celebration, or just a brilliant excuse to have an unforgettable day together.
Colour fun runs are popular because they are active, visual and easy to customise. They can be used for school fundraising, sports clubs, youth groups, holiday programs, childcare centres, community events and end-of-year celebrations.
What do you need to run one?
Here's your essential shopping list.
Colour Powder
This is the heart of the event. We recommend 100g of genuine Holi colour powder per participant. To work out how much to order, simply multiply 100g by your expected number of participants.
For example: 100g x 300 participants = 30kg of colour powder.
Quick guide:
- 100 participants = 10kg of colour powder
- 200 participants = 20kg of colour powder
- 300 participants = 30kg of colour powder
- 500 participants = 50kg of colour powder
If you are planning extra colour stations, multiple races or a colour explosion finale, consider ordering additional powder so your volunteers do not run out during the event.
Our colour powder is available in bulk boxes, 100g paper bags, 500g (950ml) BPA-free bottles, and colour powder balls, so you can choose whatever format works best for your colour station volunteers.
Our powder is safe for skin, and produces that signature vivid colour cloud that makes these events so spectacular.
Bulk boxes are ideal for large events and refilling colour stations. 100g paper bags are perfect for colour explosion finales. 500g bottles are easy for volunteers to handle at colour stations, and colour powder balls add a fun throwing element for selected event moments.
UV400 Sunglasses
While our colour powder is completely safe, many schools require eye protection as standard. Our UV400 rainbow sunglasses tick both boxes. They protect against the sun and make a brilliant keepsake for participants, so be sure to get enough for every runner.
Sunglasses are also a great way to make your event photos look more consistent and colourful, especially when paired with white shirts or rainbow accessories.
Headbands
Rainbow headbands are a fun finishing touch that keep powder out of participants' hair and double as a souvenir of the day. Pair them with the sunglasses for a complete look every participant will love.
They are especially popular for school colour runs because they are simple, practical and easy for students to wear throughout the event.
Start and Finish Line
Help your runners know exactly where to go. A Start and Finish line gives your event a polished, professional feel and makes for a great photo opportunity. It could be an inflatable arch, helium balloons, water sprinklers, flags, or anything else you can think of.
Other start and finish line ideas include bunting, handmade banners, sponsor signage, a decorated school gate or a simple balloon arch.
This area is one of the best photo spots of the day, so make it bright, clear and easy to see.
Water Blasters and Hoses
Damp skin and clothing makes colour powder even more vivid, so having water blaster stations alongside your colour stations takes the visual impact to another level.
Set up large buckets at water stations so volunteers can keep blasters filled throughout the event. You can also mix the colour powder into the water to get coloured water, or use them with our slime for extra fun.
Just make sure your course is suitable for water play and that surfaces remain safe for participants. Keep water stations away from slippery concrete or areas where runners may lose grip.
Optional extras
Want to make your event even more spectacular? Consider adding foam cannons for a foam party element.
The 100g bags make for a great colour explosion finale at the end of the run, where everyone throws their powder into the air simultaneously. Great for photos of your event you can use on social media and to promote next years event.
Other optional extras include music, a DJ, obstacles, slip-and-slide zones, photo backdrops, sponsor banners, food stalls, prize giveaways, slime stations and colour powder balls.
A colour explosion finale is one of the easiest ways to create a big visual moment. Give each participant a 100g bag of colour powder, count down together, then have everyone throw their powder into the air at the same time.
It creates a spectacular cloud of colour and gives you amazing photos for social media, newsletters and next year’s event promotion.
Setting up your course
Once your supplies are sorted, it's time to plan your course. A good rule of thumb is four colour powder stations and two water stations, spaced evenly around your track. Set each colour station up with a table, plenty of powder in your chosen format (allocated based on the number of runners and races), and an enthusiastic volunteer.
At each colour station, you may need:
- A table
- Colour powder in your chosen format
- Buckets or containers if using bulk powder
- Volunteers to throw or apply the powder
- Clear instructions for volunteers
- Easy access to refill supplies
At each water station, you may need:
- Water blasters
- Large buckets
- A hose or refill access
- Volunteers to manage the station
- Towels or mats if needed for wet areas
Keep your course simple, visible and easy to follow. A loop around a school oval, sports field or open park area often works well.
For your colour explosion finale, give each participant a bag of powder and count down together before launching it into the sky. Add some music and you've got yourself a moment nobody will forget.
Colour Fun Run Safety Tips
A little planning can help your colour fun run run smoothly on the day.
Before the event, let participants and families know what to expect. Encourage runners to wear old white or light-coloured clothing, closed-in shoes, sunglasses and comfortable clothing suitable for running or walking.
You may also want to:
- Provide sunglasses for all participants
- Keep colour powder away from eyes and mouths
- Set up water stations safely
- Check the course for trip hazards
- Use volunteers at every colour station
- Keep spectators clear of the running track
- Have first aid available
- Communicate allergy or sensitivity information in advance
- Remind participants that colour powder may stain some clothing or surfaces
Good preparation makes the event easier for organisers and more enjoyable for everyone involved.
